  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk (warm)
  • 1/2 cup water (warm)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for filling)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, water, and yeast; let it sit until foamy (about 5 minutes).
  2. Mix in sugar, softened butter, eggs, cocoa powder, red food coloring, and salt until well combined.
  3. Gradually add flour while stirring until a slightly sticky dough forms; knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl; cover and let it rise in a warm area until doubled (about an hour).
  5. While rising, mix softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt for the filling.
  6. Roll out dough into a rectangle; spread filling evenly over the surface.
  7. Roll tightly from one edge; slice into about 12 pieces and place cut-side up in a greased baking dish.
  8. Cover and let rise again for about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Meanwhile, prepare the frosting by mixing softened cream cheese and butter until creamy; add powdered sugar and mix until smooth.
