  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (for the glaze)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract)
  • 12 tbsp milk (for thinning, as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy; add eggs one at a time followed by vanilla.
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture until just combined.
  5. Bake for 22–25 minutes or until golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  6. For the glaze, brown the butter and whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla bean paste until smooth.
  7. Pour glaze over cooled bars and let set before slicing.
