  • ½ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon Dutch process cocoa powder
  • Gel food colors (black and orange)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter with granulated and brown sugars until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to wet mixture and combine.
  4. Divide dough into two equal parts. Mix cocoa powder and black gel color into one half; mix orange gel color into the other.
  5. Shape each colored dough into small balls (about two teaspoons each).
  6. Chill for 15 minutes, then combine one black ball with one orange ball and gently press together.
  7. Place on prepared sheets, spaced apart, and bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are set.
  8. Cool on sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
